Pursuing Your Passion, Celebrating 50 years

OUR HISTORY: The Free Methodist Medical Fellowship was organized in 1961 for the purpose of “enlisting the interest of physicians and members of other medical professions in Christian projects around the world …, to collect and disburse funds (for these ministries), and to offer guidance, assistance and fraternal interest in students preparing for medical professions, and to provide a means of bringing together physicians and others … .” The first gathering was referred to as a Theological Consultation of the Fellowship and was held on the campus of Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore , Kentucky in the fall of 1961. We gather this year to renew our passion for medical ministry in the Wesleyan Holiness understanding of the Gospel.
OUR FUTURE: The speakers for this year’s Consultation are Rev. Doug Newton and Rev. Robert Munshaw. Rev. Newton is the senior pastor of the Greenville Free Methodist Church and recent editor of the Light and Life magazine. His writings and teachings are familiar to most of us. Rev. Munshaw, a pastor in the Free Methodist Church, is now completing his doctoral studies at St. Louis University. The theme, Pursuing Your Passion, will be fleshed out in the context of the following presentations: • Incarnating Passion - Sustaining a sense of energy in the midst of daily routine, frustrations, and even adversity. • Incarnating Faith - Living out a God-man partnership in our work. • Incarnating Our Past - The Wesleyan holiness tradition teaches that we are the hands of feet of Christ. • Incarnating Divine Resources – How do we experience God working through us? There is a synergy which comes as we share in a corporate calling to serve. Yes, the Fellowship has been committed through its 50 years to nurturing this call to ministry. You will want to hear the personal testimonials of those who are actively pursuing their call to medical ministry, both in the domestic and global context. We are open to all Free Methodist healthcare professionals who wish to serve others through the church’s medical outreach throughout the world. There are also many of our Fellowship who have informal ties with the Free Methodist Church. We formerly were known as the Free Methodist Medical Fellowship, emphasizing the participation of physicians and dentists. However, the challenges that are faced at home and in our mission hospitals require involvement of all members of the healthcare team – doctors, dentists, nurses, mid-level providers, public health administrators, X-ray and lab technicians, medical educators, hospital administrators, and others. So after fifty years the Fellowship is now known as the Free Methodist Healthcare Fellowship, to reflect its inclusion of all healthcare professionals and its desire to be even more intentional about calling its members to ministry. We are reaffirming our focus on supporting our medical missionary activity around the world, much in keeping with the intent of our founders. There are almost a million Free Methodists around the world. Medical missions was an important reason for the success of our missionary effort. Currently the Free Methodist Church has important medical work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Ethiopia and India. In many of these areas we are providing the only medical care available. In addition, the leaders of the Free Methodist Church in Central Africa have founded Hope Africa University, based in Bujumbura, Burundi. Because of concerns for the staffing of FM medical ministries, schools of nursing and medical school have been established.
YOUR INVOLVEMENT: You are invited to be involved in the Free Methodist Healthcare Fellowship. There are opportunities for medical personal to help, both short term and for longer periods of time. You will have the opportunity to serve with national healthcare workers. All medical professionals are needed. Those who have a particular interest in medical education are needed to provide both classroom and clinical instruction. You will have an opportunity to be a spokesperson for medical missions in your home church and other churches who need to hear that medical missions is still a vital way of communicating the Gospel. Financial support of clinics, hospitals, and Hope Africa University is an ongoing need.
HOW TO BE A PART OF THE FELLOWSHIP: You are invited to be a part of this year’s Theological Consultation. Make plans now to attend. You will be challenged to hear what our speakers Rev. Newton and Rev. Munshaw have to say about living out your faith as the hands and feet of Christ. Your fellow healthcare professionals will share their stories of their involvement in the provision of healthcare as a ministry.
